Declutter your environment


House on "WATCH" method


Along with emotional decluttering, one needs environmental declutter as well. Very best to start the declutter is your own personal house. We keep a WATCH on our house when we are out, we ask our neighbours to keep a WATCH on our house when we are out of station. This kept me wondering what is the real funda befind House on "WATCH" (Wardrobe, Arrange, Toilet, Cooking area, Home office, Home Library)

  1. Wardrobe - Cleaning your wardrobe is the most important activity, this will help you clear the most visiting place in the house, kept clean (specially for the ladies). You can categories your wardrobe in 4 sections as below, the KIDS (Keep, Improve, Donate, Scrap) method:
    1. To keep - You are going to use them as it is
    2. To improve - You are going to use them after some improvement (repair)
    3. To donate - You are not going to use them as they don't fit you well or you are just bored of it (Can be given to the servant or NGO)
    4. To scrap - Its passed the stage of improve or donate (lets not donate the cloths which are in its worst shape)
  2. Arrange - Arrange the items immediately as they enter your house. 
    1. Let it be newspaper & mails - After reading store it in specific location or in sell the item area
    2. Let it be Grocery - Store it in Kitchen, Toilet etc immediately and throw away the old items
    3. Let it be cloths - Give them space in your wardrobe. Never buy new cloths till the time you complete KIDS method
    4. Let it be accessories - You can again use the KIDS method for males, females, children, pets and your house to declutter the accessories (For eg: decorative items for house
  3. Toilet - This is the most neglected and the most dangerous area in your house. Keep a check on cleaning all the area on a regular bases. Keep only the toiletries which is in use, throw away or give the unused toiletries to someone. Keep as little things in the Toilet as possible. Clean your luffas, razor, bucket, mug, all fittings, walls, ceiling, floor and even drainage pipes/paths and disinfect it regularly. Change your tooth brush & toilet brush every once a while.
  4. Cooking area - Its the most used, touched area in the house. The perishable area as we can call it. The less the better, give away unwanted utensils. If all the items are kept in the right place then nothing is on the counter and the area looks much clean and decluttered.
  5. Home office &/or Home library
    1. Home Office - We have a very bad habit of getting work to home, its almost become a life style or Some of us are so smart that they opt the work from home types of job (I wish I could accept and execute such types of job :P) Lets use the RAFT (Read, Act, File, Trash) method to declutter
    2. Home Library - It necessary to improve your knowledge and your dream world. Try get digital copies of books this will save the little environment left in the world for our next generation (I understand some of you like the feel/ smell of the book while reading, can you get over it for a better cause? Come on its possible). Again you can use the KIDS method to declutter.

5 Step PARIS rule to Decluttering your mind

When you start thinking of the difficulties there is only 1 solution to it.. declutter your mind and all your worries, stress and the problem related to it like tension, sleep disorder, tiredness, lack in enthusiasm will all go away. 
Lets go through a step by step approach to declutter your mind.

5 steps PARIS rule

  1. Problem - Write down the most painful issue which your mind is going through - (for eg: I am fat, I don't look good, I am not intelligent, People don't like me, I don't have friends, I am not performing well in office, no promotion, kids are angry with me etc) Lets take this example of "I am fat"
  2. Action - Write down a list which will allow you to come over this issue. Rate the made list and give rating out of 10 each. Start with the highest point Action. If you observe most of the problems listed above they are all about "I". Even if you want you mind to declutter, you need to understand that issues around you need to improve. This will help solve the "I" problem. 
    1. Exercise -  8
    2. Stop eating processed food & sweet - 7
    3. Cook yourself - 6
  3. Remind - Set remainder to do the Actions, in this case "Exercise"is the highest point action. So set a reminder for exercise 3 times in a day. This will help you to manage your time atleast once out of the 3 reminders. This will allow to get a dedicated time for this activity also there will be your phone, who will remind you. Slowing set your body slowly to a routine time of exercise.
  4. Inspect - Ask your loved ones to take a review every few days. This will allow you to share your achievements and help you get away from the snooze button. Against the target how was the performance is very important, this will allow you to rethink on your Action list.
  5. Share - Tell your success story to your friends & family. This will allow you to feel that you are on the other end of solving the problem and you will start giving pointers to others and encourage them to carry these 5 steps.
Once you have solved your Problem, repeat the steps again for solving the next big Problem in your life (for eg: no promotion etc). Share in your way of decluttering your mind.
